"Santiago, " the boy said to him as they climbed the bank from where the skiff was hauled up.

"I could go with you again. We've made some money."

The old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him.

"No, " the old man said. "You're with a lucky boat. Stay with them."

"But remember how you went eighty-seven days without fish and then we caught big ones every day for three weeks."

"I remember, " the old man said. "I know you did not leave me because you doubted."

"It was papa made me leave. I am a boy and I must obey him."

"I know, " the old man said. "It is quite normal."

"He hasn't much faith."

"No, " the old man said. "But we have. Haven't we?"

"Yes, " the boy said. "Can I offer you a beer on the Terrace and then we'll take the stuff home."

"Why not?" the old man said. "Between fishermen."

"산티아고 할아버지." 조각배가 올려져 있는 곳에서부터 둑을 올라오며 소년이 말했다.

"다시 할아버지와 함께 할 수 있을 것 같아요. 돈을 조금 벌었거든요."

노인은 소년에게 낚시하는 법을 알려주었었고 그 소년은 그를 좋아했다.

"아니." 노인은 말했다. "운이 좋은 배에 있으니. 그들과 함께 있거라."

"하지만 87일 동안 고기를 못 잡으셨잖아요. 우리가 3주간 매일같이 큰 고기를 잡았던걸 기억해보세요."

"기억한단다." 노인은 말했다. "네가 의심을 해서 떠난 게 아니란 걸 알아."

"아빠가 저를 떠나게 했죠. 저는 소년일 뿐이고 그를 따라야 하거든요."

"알고 있단다." 노인은 말했다. "그게 꽤나 보통인 거야."

"아빠는 믿음이 부족한 것 같아요."

"그러니?" 노인은 말했다. "하지만 우리는 서로 믿고 있지. 안 그러니?"

"맞아요." 소년은 말했다. "Terrace에서 맥주 한잔 사 드려도 될까요? 그러고 나서 물건을 집으로 옮기죠."

"아무렴 어떻겠니?(좋구나)" 노인은 말했다. "어부들끼리."
